A. The owner of a golf cart or off-road vehicle to be operated on highways in Jasper County must register the golf cart or off-road vehicle at the Sheriff’s office annually. Golf cart and off-road vehicle registrations will be valid for one year beginning January 1st and ending December 31st each calendar year.

B. In order to register a golf cart or off-road vehicle, the owner shall submit to the Sheriff a registration application which shall include the following:

1. Owner shall provide the following information or certifications about the vehicle:

a. Make, model and year of golf cart or off-road vehicle if available;

b. Serial number of golf cart or off-road vehicle if available;

c. Vehicle capacity recommended by manufacture;

d. Vehicle is a “golf cart” or “off-road vehicle” as defined in JCC 11.35.010;

e. Brakes are in good working condition;

f. Equipped with manufacturer’s serial number plate, rear view mirror, headlights, taillights, brake lights, front and rear reflectors, and a horn; and

g. The golf cart or off-road vehicle displays a triangular “slow moving vehicle” emblem on the rear of the vehicle in accordance with IC 9-21-9-2.

2. Copy of a valid driver’s license;

3. Proof of financial responsibility;

4. Mailing address and telephone number of owner; and

5. Annual registration fee.

C. The Sheriff shall review each registration application for compliance with this section.

1. In the event that an application meets the foregoing registration requirements, the Sheriff shall:

a. Designate a unique registration number for a newly registered golf cart or off-road vehicle and retain the golf cart or off-road vehicle’s registration information;

b. Issue a registration decal bearing the golf cart or off-road vehicle’s registration number to the owner of a newly registered golf cart or off-road vehicle; and

c. Issue a registration decal bearing the calendar year to the owner.

2. In the event that an application fails to meet the foregoing registration requirements, the Sheriff shall return the application materials to the applicant and delineate the reasons the registration application is rejected.

D. The Sheriff shall maintain a record of:

1. Registration acceptances and denials;

2. List of all golf carts and off-road vehicles with active registrations; and

3. Registration documents submitted by owners of actively registered golf carts and off-road vehicles. [Ord. 11-07-22 § 1; Ord. 4-6-20A § 1. Formerly 11.35.060.]
